CASE endorses and promotes the use of Free/Libre, and Open Source Software in Education, Research and also in Public Administrations and Companies.
Moreover, CASE members actively participate Free/Open Source community efforts, producing software and other contributions. Our role is recognized and appreciated in many FLOSS projets, like Funambol .
CASE is involved in a number of studies on Free/Libre, and Open Source Software, including:
-
Empirical analyses of quality, growth, and evolution
-
Models of migrations and adoptions
-
Definition of quality models, involving technologies, procedures and policies operations, to allow their use into industial contexts
-
Teaching and proposing students' contributions to Free/Open Source projects
This studies have been often performed in the framework of extrernally funded projects, like the one listed below.

Several empirical studies have been published on major forums on various aspects: evaluation practices in
terms of quality, productivity, diffusion, participation;
communications, relationships with Agile methodologies,

Open Source Processes and Products |
|
We are involved in studies on OSS processes and products.
We are partner of the EU FP6 Project Qualipso, where the quality of the development processes and products are carefully scrutinized.
We collaborate with several Free/Open Source communities and companies, like Funambol. Moreover, in our university courses we encourage students to release their projects or to contribute to existing well-known initiatives, in order to gain experience from adequately chosen highly skilled team.

We are involved in a number of migrations of Public Administrations and enterprises.
Our
activities starts from identifying needs that a software fills, and its
role in the work processes. Moreover, considering all the human factors
that affect the migration process, as well as the technical problems to
overcome it is possible to formulate different migration scenarios,
with associated impact analysis.
Our approach has been validated in a number of experiences, in Europe
and in Italy, for further references we remand to the project COSPA
